Madonna and I are shocked

A few weeks ago I wrote, "The Madonna" and since then I have been astounded by the response I have received about it. People love it.

Mom tells me it is the best poem I have written and she is sure she heard gasps when Peg read it at the last poetry reading. Peg then read it at her poetry class that Jim Harms is teaching (I am so jealous! I want to take that class!) Apparently they loved it too.

I am pleased beyond belief! but a little confused. When I wrote "The Madonna" I didn't think it was that great and I even wrote a revision of it. However, before I could do anything about putting out the revision I became to get feedback for the first one. Since everyone loved it the way it was I didn't dare bring out the new one. I went back and read the revision and realized the first was far superior to the second and nearly burned it.

I just feel a little stunned. Mom even asked me if I was sure I was the one who wrote? I'll take that as a complement because anything else would be....uncivilized.

Yes: THE MADONNA IS LOVELY...I can't recall if I told you, but the Merton Society has a prize each year for POETRY OF THE SACRED.
I STRONGLY SUGGEST you submit THE MADONNA.
I have had the experience of having what I thought was a wonderful poem...and when I read it I am met with yawns and bored faces. Then I read what I call a throwaway poem...something I just jotted down, don't consider it to be much...and that is received by my audience with delight. This tells us that we are not our best critics.
You just throw images at me. You write an I scramble your words and come up with images:THE SHOCKED MADONNA. THE PAINTER...a response to your poem THE MADONNA from the painter's point of view.
I must tell you that I have a movie that I want to highly recommend..It's called THE HISTORY BOYS..I'll send you an email on that due to it's not being PG rated.,,but it has a lot of Auden and Hopkins and Hardy in it. Poets about whom I know nothing.
I finally got the H. Bloom book on Poets and I was reading about AUDEN
and he wrote a book of essays called; THE DYER'S HAND...well of course I must have it...I'll give you a review when I'm done.
